Arid ecosystems occur in areas of less than 250 mm rainfall (ie. north of Goyders line) mainly on perpetual lease or pastoral country. Characteristic shrublands include Pearl Bluebush (Maireana sedifolia), Black bluebush (Maireana pyramidata) and other chenopod shrublands (eg. with Atriplex spp.) while characteristic woodlands are dominated by Black Oak (Casuarina pauper), Sugarwood (Myoporum platycarpum), Bullock Bush (Alectryon oleifolius) and Northern Cypress Pine (Callitris glaucophylla).
These woodlands and shrublands are home to bird species such as the White-winged Fairy Wren, Red Throat and Plains Wanderer and marsupials such as Bolams Mouse.
