The mid-north and northern Mt Lofty Ranges contain some of South Australia's most extensive and diverse grasslands. These naturally occurring open areas were very attractive to early graziers in the region due to their feed value and as a result have been highly modified and degraded over time. Iron Grass grasslands (those dominated by Lomandra spp.) are now listed nationally as threatened ecosystems and many other grassland types are also under threat. Characteristic grassland plants include Lomandra effusa, Lomandra multiflora ssp. dura, Themeda triandra, Austrostipa spp., and Austrodanthonia spp.
