Common Name: Swamp Paper-bark

Description:
Large shrub to small, crooked tree, 2-8 m high. Distinctive, white, peeling, papery bark. Dull green, small, narrow, blunt, crowded in opposite pairs at right angles to preceeding pairs on regularly dividing branchlets, to 8 mm long by 2 mm wide. Short, cream-white flowers, clustered together at end of branchlets. Spring to early summer. Small, woody, cup-shaped, to 5 mm diameter, solitary or clustered. Throughout the year.
Natural Distribution:
Commonly occurs in sub-coastal regions associated with low lying saline swamps. Extends into Vic. Associated with saline vegetation communities on slightly higher ground next to areas of Samphire.
Notes:
Slow growth rate. Commonly used in revegetation of saline soils (highly salt-tolerant). An important plant in saltland ecology. Bark traditionally used for many purposes by Aboriginal people.
